Enfield and Barnet Pub Photos

This is a collection of photos taken between 1980 and 2021 of all the pubs in the Enfield and Barnet branch of CAMRA. To view the photos click here, to find out a little of the history, read on.

History

1980

In the 1980s Andy Milne undertook the task of taking photos of all the pubs in the Enfield and Barnet branch of CAMRA.

He repeated the exercise in 1990.

2001

In 2001 he lent me his collection of photos, 738 photos in 7 photo albums, so that I could digitise them and make them more accessible to branch members.

This was in the days of dial-up modems for internet access so a web site was out of the question. I produced a CD of all the pictures which was given to branch members who expressed an interest.

2012

I continued Andy's 10 year census of the pubs in 2002, 2012, and 2021.

After Andy sadly died CAMRA head office were approached and asked if they would be interested in looking after his collection of photos. As local history is not in their remit they declined. For a while they were looked after by Richard, the landlord of The Little Green Dragon in Winchmore Hill. A good home was then found for them at Barnet Museum where as far as I know they remain to this day (May 2021).

2021

In February 2021 I put them on this website and made it available.

Pub Closures

Since Andy Milne's first survey of 295 pubs, 127 pubs have closed for various reasons: demolished; converted to residential housing; converted to business use or buried beneath an access road to the north circular! The Plough in Enfield was demolished the day before it was due to be assessed for listing status. The Jester in Cockfosters burnt down a couple of years ago and remains a ruin. Time will tell how many survive after the Covid pandemic.
